Congrats to mkbruin! It’s a 2nd-generation 2003-2009 Prius. And this thing has been neglected. A few more photos below. Down to bare plastic on door handles, the rear wiper is in shambles and of course there is the requisite Toyota dent.
Original post: OK Oppo, you’ve survived another Monday. Let’s play a game. I have a star and 100 Internet points for the first one of you that can tell me what vehicle model this ugly roof belongs to.

Mazda 3?

Nope sorry. I’ve seen some ugly Mazda3’s but this isn’t one.

Location of the antenna makes me think passenger car, but the paint makes me think Ford.
Maybe an early 2000s Kia Rio?

Passenger car. Close to the right era, not a Kia or Ford.

Hyundai Sonata

Not a Hyundai, though I have seen a few with paint like this.

I got nothing.

Come on you gotta have something. Toss out the name of something you don’t like maybe it’ll be it and I’ll post the other pictures of the horrible condition of this car.

Well then it must be a Chrysler 200/Sebring.

Kinda looks like a Honda that doesn’t get washed
Or any car in Houston that doesn’t live in a garage

is the car itself ugly or just the paint?
![]() 09/26/2017 at 06:55 |

Uhhh... I think it’s kinda ugly and a lot of people here would agree but it’s not overly offensive when the paint is OK.

Haha surprisingly not an FCA product. I actually don’t think I’ve seen a 3rd gen Sebring/200 that bad in the paint department yet oddly enough. Maybe because I don’t really see them period.

Honda and nissans all get this way pretty quick here in TX. This isn’t either. It’s not uncommon to see cars in rough shape that have been left out but this one was particularly bad plus I liked the pattern and thought it made a neat picture.
![]() 09/26/2017 at 09:15 |

I don’t think that issue is limited to TX. I see a ton of them driving around NJ with messed up paint. Not sure what they are doing wrong with their paint process, but its pretty clear it’s systemic.

Honda and Nissan seem to be the worst. It happens quick here (the Juke came out in what, 2011? And I’ve already seen several with peeling clearcoat), but even when I’m up north I still see Altimas less than 10 years old down to the primer. I think every manufacturer has some bad batches. When I was growing up in PA in the ‘90's I remember some white and beige Chrysler paints that didn’t last very long at all.

Mazda 6

I think it’s worse that just a bad batch, I’ve seen several 9th-gen civics missing all their clearcoat on every horizontal-ish surface. I get that neglect can accelerate the decay, but it happens too frequently to just be a bad batch or two. Something is wrong with either their QC or process.

No - good guess though a guy I work with has a Mazda 6 with a trunk lid that looks like this. It is a Japanese make though.
![]() 09/26/2017 at 09:26 |
|
Yeah - I guess what I meant wasn’t like one batch from a supplier but rather just a bad “generation” some color that has a flaw with either the paint or primer itself or the application process that means that every one out there in that color for that generation of car will go to crap.

It’s probably a 2006 ish Altima

Any Peugeot from the late 80's-early 90's.
But I doubt it’s that

Looks just like my Neon
So my guess would be some kind of Chrysler/Dodge from the early to mid 90s with that same crappy paint.
![]() 09/26/2017 at 09:30 |
|
Yeah a lot newer. It’s been solved... updating now.
![]() 09/26/2017 at 09:31 |

A lot newer which is why it was so interesting to me. Yeah all early 90's Chrysler stuff was bad. I dated a girl in 2001 that had a Neon that couldn’t have been more than 5 years old with chunks of the paint that had just peeled off down to the gray primer.
![]() 09/26/2017 at 09:32 |

Nah those look even worse. Mkbruin got it. Updating now.

I kind of think the paint is growing on me though. It adds character and certainly makes it feel even more 90s. I gotta fix my radio so that I can blast some Green Day and Blink 182 to really revel in the nostalgia.

2003-2009 Prius? Wow, the Texan sun is terrible for car paint
![]() 09/26/2017 at 09:50 |
|
It is. On the flip side is that as long as you aren’t on the Gulf coast the nothing rusts. In this case, though, it is hard to tell if it is just age/sun or if this thing just has a crapload of miles on it. I haven’t really seen any other Priuses (Prii?) of that era quite like this, but I’ve heard stories of people running up 300-500k miles on them.

You need to go on eBay and get an era appropriate Sony X-Plod or Kenwood 1-DIN unit with full blinkenlights.

Dang. Next guess was going to be a Toyota of some sort. Maybe an old Corolla. But congrats mkbruin

Thats pretty much what I have. Its some aftermarket junk that shorts out randomly and 3 speakers that sort of work at low volumes. I think if I fix the grounding issue before it lights on fire and just put in a couple working speakers I have from other cars, then it would be pretty legit.
This stupid radio makes all kinds of flashing and beeping noises, has even stayed on after removing the key so its definitely a piece of work, on par with any hackjob 90s install.
![]() 09/26/2017 at 09:57 |

Probably put in by BestBuy. I bet you’ll find a shitload of crimp-on pigtail connectors back there when you pull it rather than anything soldered.
![]() 09/26/2017 at 10:07 |
|
I know, I am mildly scared about that haha. But I am also glad that I am now worrying about things like the wiper blades falling off and the radio being possessed rather than overheating and smokeshows.

drive through car washes are hard on paint in the way that those pics show......
